The Moscow Huawei R&D Center is looking for an enthusiastic person capable of succeeding in a technically significant environment, for the position of an engineer for media codec compression algorithms. We are working in the area of lossless data compression for different type of data located in our Cloud storage. Our major activity is on cutting edge of R&D in lossless compression algorithm development for cloud storage needs. As team of professionals in this field we are looking for the highly skilled people that can conduct world-level algorithmic research and implementation in lossless compression. As a part of our team you will have a great opportunity to conduct algorithmic research in challenging domain of lossless re-compression for media files as well as implement the best in the world compression algorithms in our software products bringing value to our customers.

Responsibilities:

• Be responsible for the design and implementation of media compression and media lossless re-compression algorithms, output design documents
• Responsible for optimizations (hw and algorithmic) on target hardware platform to achieve required parameters for the product
• Deeply understand the mainstream technology and related theories of data compression and encoding and decoding (like H.264, H.265, JPEG) , accurately judge the technology evolution trend, support the formulation of technology strategy, and ensure that key technologies are ready in advance.
• Participate in the R&D team as the main technical force, designing and developing of high-value commercial products, and help the team build competitiveness.

Requirements:

• Ph.D./master in mathematics, computer science, or similar technical field
• Strong mathematical background
• Skills: C, C++, Python, x86 asm/intrinsics (nice to have), Linux, git, scripting
• Have at least 2 years of working experience in algorithm development and optimization
• English fluently (intermediate is OK too)
• Skills are welcome:
  • Machine Learning knowledge and expertise
  • Knowledge and experience in compression field (lossless compression, media compression)

Best candidate has expertise in one or several topic from below list:

• information theory, Shannon theorem, Codec technology, Entropy encoding, such as Huffman coding/arithmetic coding, etc.
• various data transformation filters to improve compression

• similarity calculation between data blocks, like rabin hash, min hash, etc.
• general-purpose lossless compression algorithms, such as LZ77/LZMA/ZSTD/LZ4/PAQ/BWT/snappy/xdelta, etc.
• common image encoding and decoding methods (such as JPEG, PNG, etc.) and video encoding and decoding methods (such as h264, h265, av1, vvc, etc.)
• latest lossless compression algorithm of image or video in the industry.
